Trip Itinerary

A detailed itinerary isn’t given because how you encounter something shapes the experience and the learning. If you have an idea of what’s next, it isn’t as impactful. Thus, you’re simply invited to enjoy the journey and receive each site as a gift and surprise. But don’t worry, we will visit all of the major sites during this trip.

What You Need to Know

Safety

Although it’s impossible to guarantee 100% safety, travel in Turkey is very safe. We travel with a Turkish guide who is always aware of what’s going on in the country. If there is even a hint of potential danger, we’ll simply avoid the area. Everyone who returns from these trips remarks, “I never once felt unsafe.”

Typical day

A normal day begins with a wake up call at 6:00 a.m., breakfast at 6:30, devotions at 6:55, and then we’re on our way! Most of our days involve moderate to strenuous hiking. Lunch tends to fall between 12:15–1:30pm, and will be served on location or at a quick restaurant. Since lunch can come later in the day, it’s highly recommended that you carry snacks with you.

Weather

The weather at this time of year is usually fantastic. The summer heat is gone and the crowds have thinned out. Because we’re going to be in multiple different regions, you’ll need to come prepared to layer up and down. Lows in late October can be in the 50’s with daytime highs reaching mid 70’s to lower 80’s.

Hiking shoes and boots

You will need a sturdy pair of hiking boots or shoes that have great ankle support. Obtain them well in advance and break in thoroughly before departure. Your shoes will be one of the most important items you have for this trip.

Physical requirements and training

Prepare for 5 to 7 miles of strenuous hiking/climbing/walking each day of the trip. Physical training (long before our departure) is a must. While there will be challenging hikes, I will be monitoring the group’s capacity and make adjustments as necessary.

Bathrooms

Approximately a third of bathroom breaks will be in nature. Any used toilet paper or feminine products will need to be packed out (bring a large zip lock bag). There will be protected areas in nature for women separate from men.

What to bring

The trip is casual; expect to wear shorts/pants and a short sleeve shirt (or a long-sleeve hiking shirt if you prefer) every day. Please be prepared to have a “modesty kit,” meaning long pants and something to cover your shoulders, as there are some religious sites that require modest dress.

Gear and gadgets

Feel free to bring a digital camera, action camera, and/or your cell phone for taking pictures. Cell phones are not to be used for calls during the day, and there is no recording (audio or video) of any of the teachings during the trip.

History and geography

Please try and memorize Paul’s Missionary Journeys as well as the general locations of the Seven Churches of Revelation. The study guide, with basic maps, will be sent to you a few weeks before departure.
